CHAPTER 2: Steve

Steve

Steve Carter exited Oxford after his last exam. The pressure of another school year was finally over and he felt relief as well as excitement. Starting the car, he pulled on to the street and headed home.

His mind running wild with the thought of Brenda, seeing other county and spending the summer with John. He and John couldn’t be more in love or happy. Living together they’d reached a new level in their relationship and were thinking about marriage. That’s how their trip to the States came about. In certain parts two men could join before god and pledge their eternal love. They wanted to make that promise to one another.

Steve made a U-turn and parked in front of his building. He grabbed his backpack and entered the apartment as John finished his call.

“How did you do?” John asked as he kissed him.

“Ok. I couldn’t stop thinking about you.” Steve said returning the affection.

“I just talked to Brenda. She says it’s cool for us to visit her.”

“Did you tell her?”

“No, Ill wait till we get there.” John walked toward the bedroom.

“Coming?” he asked looking back at Steve.

”What do you think?” Steve said following behind his lover.

Two hours later, Steve and John were packing their bags into the car. They were making a trip to Basingstoke to see their parents before they left for the States.

“Have you talked to your parents yet?” Steve asked.

“Yeah, Mum. But I didn‘t tell her.”

“How are you feeling about it?” Steve asked.

“Ok, they were a lot more understanding about us being together then we thought, hopeful they’d be ok about this.” John said.

“They surprised the hell out of me.”

When John brought Steve home for the first time, he was ready for the sh*t to hit the fan. He thought his parents would flip out, his father would disown him. But Mr. and Mrs. Dixon did the opposite. Once the initial shock was over, they welcomed Steve with open arms. It took some getting use to, but they loved their son and respected his choices as a young man. They weren’t however happy about being deceived, and they explained to John he could have been upfront and open with them. John in turn came clean with them.

That happened only a year ago, but to Steve it felt like hundreds. He was happy, and he never wanted to leave John’s side. It was the two of them and nothing or no one could shake that.
