CHAPTER 13: The End

"Well all the best, and I will call you when I get really nice and settled in over there ok? Cheers.. and Jess.. I'll always love you, don't forget that." And with that, Steven hung the phone back down on its reciever and picked up his luggage and marched down the stairs. As he reached there, he didn't see Linda standing there in full support, instead just his mother and father.

"All ready?" His dad said, in all honesty Steven wanted to just sit down and wait as long as it took for Linda to come home so that he could say goodbye. But he knew he would miss his plane and then all of the other plans would be completely and royaly screwed.

"Yeah..I just wish Linda had been here." And with that Steven marched forward to the family's car, loaded up and they were off to the rail station to drop him off so he could catch the train in to London and hop a flight out.
=====================================
"Well I guess I shouldn't be all upset, cause I'd better get used to it.." Linda said, thinking that John obviously knew of Steven's decision to go to collge in America.

"Why?" John insisted, being quite serious.

"You mean you don't know? Oh dear.. Steven's going to America for college.. he's leaving.." And as she looked at her watch, a terrible look of horror came over her face. "Shit; right now I was supposed to be over at their house to say good bye and go with them on the way to the rail station..." Linda gathered her things, laid some money on the table. "Sorry John, I've got to run.. I have to say goodbye to Stevie.."

"Not without me!" John said, throwing some money back at the table while running after Linda, although his money completely missed the table and nearly hit the waitress. Everyone in the room was left with a shocked face as the two exited the shop in an extreme hurry.
====================================
"Well, here we are." Graham said pulling up to the station and putting the car into park.

"I know it sounds like someone else saying this, but.. I really am going to miss Basingstoke. And of course you two.." Steven said as he nearly sprung water from his eye sockets. But instead he just shook his fathers hand, and as his mum got out of the car he hugged her and gave a slight kiss on the cheek.

"We love you Steven.." His mother said as he made his way deep into the depths of the station lined with luggage. Suddenly in his hometown, he felt lost like a small child in a massive sea of people all swarming around him, bumping into him. And yet none of them seemed to know him. None of them spat at him or called him a dirty queer as they went by. He was feeling better and better and better all the time. And just as he located his train, he looked at his watch, he had about five more minutes to spare. So he found a seat and reflected on what his life had been like ever since he had the near foolish notion to publicly come out.
==================================
It was nearly five of the hour as Linda and John parked the car and raced into the station, looking for what was seemingly a proverbial needle in a haystack. Nearly unsure of where exactly to start their search, John asked a lady working at a desk behind a computer and telephone where the information for outgoing trains were kept. Pointed in a direction of a huge electronic board, Linda was the first to spot the two trains leaving for London, however since one had left about twenty minutes ago, and the other was scheduled to arrive in about 3 minutes, she took a stab at guessing and off they were to find the location of the train.

Arriving just as the train did for it's five minute rest period to unload and then again reload, John and Linda looked frantically about the entire place, straining their eyes to see the face they both loved so much and adored, and yet both in their own separate way. Finally frustration at it's highest, and to near panic, Linda spotted Steve sitting down almost in tears, and she just rushed to him. John finally caught up and quickly made his way through people and got there.

"I thought I wasn't going to see you for another four years when you weren't at the bottom of the steps Lins.."

"Like I could let you go that long..four years and a day?" Linda said while laughing nervously, noticing John closing in. "I kinda brought someone else along that wanted to say goodbye..."

"John.." Steve said, suddenly popping up from his seat. "I tryied to catch you the other day when you were over my house, but my mum was being so stupid. I wanted to tell you, honest..."

"Steve.. it's ok.. just, why are you going? Was it something I said, or did.. or maybe even something I didn't do or say.. I just.."

"No Johnny, I heard you told your parents that you're gay. And all the better for you. I just need out.."

"Steve. Please don't go. I need you. I really really need you now more than ever before.."

"Oh.. just like he needed you a few years ago and you did nothing but sit with that prat Grainger and his sidekick? Letting Stevie hit rock bottom onstage? I say fair's fair." Linda said suddenly upset with John. "Steve, go for yourself. Not for anyone else, not even for me. You've always been my best friend no matter what and you will be. And for just in case America changes you.." Linda said as she grabbed Steve and kissed him full out on the lips as she had done just once before when he was about ten or so and they were..'going out'. It more reminded him of his childhood than of anything else. "Don't get any hopes up, I just wanted to say goodbye while I still know pretty much where your lips have been. Ring me soon as you get in!" She said as she grabbed a tissue from her purse, dabbed away a tear and started walking towards the exit. Steven's heart nearly sunk down to his rear watching her hurt so much by him. But then he remembered one thing; John Dixon was still standing right next to him.

"I don't want you to leave Steven. But if you do, I guess I will understand. You deserve a reprieve from the hatred here in Basingstoke. Besides I don't know how much we would have really seen each other anymore, because of my college still and my dad wants me to work with him. And everythings all f*cked up.. and.." John was babbling on and the train was about to leave, so Steven just grabbed him and kissed him as passionately as he could with all sobby eyes.

"I'm not good at goodbyes, and this one isn't any easier than that day on the sports field. Of course I want you still to be happy, but I guess I should add that I now and forever will always love you Johnny." And with that, the doors to the train closed and as the car moved away; John started to run along with it, as so just to keep Steven's young innocent sweet face framed in the glass of the door. But at last the train went out into the world where John couldn't keep up pace. From the back of the train came his love's image, hands pressed against the pane of glass. And John did all he could but fall to his knees and die. For life always had its' way of revenge and now he realized what he had done to Steve, tore an irreplaceable hole in his heart, which now had been passed back along to him.
