CHAPTER 4: Meeting
Ben and Birdie came downstairs, dressed and ready to go.
“So where are we going?” Birdie asked.
“I saw this nice restaurant just around the corner, so I figure we would go there.” Mat said.
“As long as the food doesn’t suck I don’t care, I am so hungry.” Ben said.
“Worked up an appetite did you?” Birdie giggled.
“You could say that.” Ben said.
Mat and Steven just looked at each other wondering what was so funny.
“So you and your friend, What’s his name had fun hanging out together?” Mat asked.
“His name is Evan and yeah we had fun hanging out.” Ben said, “ We talked about sports, school,
watched a little television.”
“What about you Birdie did you have fun with Jack?” Steven asked.
“Yeah we had lots of fun, he is really nice.” Birdie said.
“He seemed like a nice boy, but remember he is still a teenage boy and they have a one track mind.”
Mat said.
“Tell me about it.” Ben smiled.
Steven looked at Ben “And what did you mean by that?’
“Nothing, nothing really.” Ben said.
Mat, Steven, Birdie and Ben arrived at the restaurant. Jack, John and Lizzie where all at home, when
there was a knock on the door. It was Kevin and Evan they had come over because they had all planned
to go out to eat together.
“Hello” Kevin said “Ready to go?”
“Yeah lets go.” John said.
They all packed into the car accept Lizzie, she wasn’t feeling to good so she was going to stay home.
They arrived not to much later and went in the restaurant. Jack noticed Birdie, Ben and Mat sitting at a
table eating, Steven had gotten up to go to the restroom.
Jack tapped Evan to get his attention “Lets go say hey.”
“Dad we see someone we know can we go say hi?” Jack asked.
“Sure, we have to go the way anyway because it seems the only empty table is the one over there.” John
pointed to the table right across from Ben and Birdie.
“Okay.” Jack said.
John and Kevin walked to the table and sat down, Jack and Evan went to Ben and Birdie’s table to say
hey.
“Hey funny seeing you two here.” Jack said.
Birdie, Ben and Mat looked up at Jack and Evan.
“Hello” Birdie said “Wasn’t expecting to see you two.”
“We came with are parents.” Evan said “It is like a tradition, we go out like every other week.”
“Oh, we are here with are parents to.” Ben said motioning to Mat
“Nice to see you again Jack, “Mat said “And this must be Evan?”
“Yes sir.” Evan said.
“Hey are you going to sit down, we need to order.” Kevin loudly said from their table.
Jack and Evan turned around and looked at their dads.
“We best sit down.” Jack said
Jack and Evan went to the table and sat down. They order their food and waited, not to much later
Steven came out of the restroom and sat down at the table, not noticing who is sitting at the other table
across from them.
“Dad” Birdie said “Are friends are here.”
“Really, where are they?” Steven asked wanted to see who had his kids so happy.
Birdie gestured to the table across from them and Steven turned to see who was sitting there. Imagine
his surprise when he saw John and Kevin at the table next to them.
“John” Steven said softly.
“Oh yeah that is right you went to school with Jack’s dad he told us yesterday.” Birdie said.
“John is Jack’s father?” Steven said shocked
“Yeah” Ben said “And the other guy is Evan and that is his dad Kevin”
“Granger” Steven said.
“Oh I should have figured Kevin and John did go to the same school......you must know him to.” Birdie
said.
You know how sometimes you can feel someone watching you, well John had a feeling like someone
was watching him and turned to see who it was, and there he saw the two most beautiful eyes, it was
Steven. John and Steven’s eyes meet and they couldn’t turn away.
“Not here, not now.” Steven said
Mat looked at Steven “What are you talking about.”
“We have to go now.” Steven said.
“What are you talking about.” Mat said “We just got here.”
“We have to go now.” Steven said
Ben and Birdie looked at Steven
“But we wanted you to meet our friends.” Birdie said
Just then Steven got up and walked out the restaurant. Mat followed him out, Ben and Birdie just looked
at each other. Seeing that something was wrong Evan and Jack went and sat next to Ben and Birdie.
“What is wrong?” Jack asked
“We don’t know.” Birdie said “We just wanted our dad to meet you two and then he got all upset when
we said John was your dad and got up and left.”
“I have a question.” Jack said “I thought Steven was your father?”
“He is” Ben said
“But I thought that the guy I met at your house was Steven your dad.” Jack said
“No that is Mat our other dad.” Birdie said
“You have two dads?” Jack asked
“Yeah” Birdie said
“You have a problem with that?” Ben said
“No” Jack said “ Just trying to understand.”
“Look we have to go.” Birdie said as she got up.
Birdie and Ben walked outside with Jack and Evan following them. Kevin, who doesn’t realize that, that
was Steven Carter, look at John who was off in his on little world.
“Hey what do you think is going on?” Kevin asked
“I don’t know.” John said softly
“Well, I’m going to get our boys” Kevin said “Lets go.”
Outside Steven is crying in Mat’s arms but won’t tell him what’s wrong. Then Birdie, Ben, Jack and Evan
come outside. Seeing the state their father is in they run over to see what is wrong.
“Dad” Birdie said “What happen, did we do something wrong?”
Steven look at Birdie “You didn’t do anything wrong, It is something else.”
Steven looked up to see Jack and Evan, they looked just like their fathers. It was like reliving his youth
again. Jack noticing Steven looking at him decided to say something.
“I know it is none of my business.” Jack said “But if we can help.”
Jack was cut off by Ben “ What happened? You were fine, then you freaked when we mentioned our
friends.”
Just then John and Kevin walked out the restaurant. Steven couldn’t look at John.
“What is going on?” Kevin asked.
“Nothing dad” Evan said.
Steven looked up to see everyone looking at him, He wiped his eyes, and walked towards the car and
got in. Mat got in the car and told Birdie and Ben to get in the car. They got in the car a drove off, leaving
John, Jack, Kevin and Evan outside wondering what happened.
“You want to hang out with them? Their family is crazy.” Kevin said. “And if that was their dad who was
the other guy?”
“A good friend.” Evan said
John looked at the car driving away and all he could think was,” That man must be Steven’s love.”
