CHAPTER 8: It only gets worse
"Isn't that?? Yes it is.. STEVEN CARTER!!!" Linda wailed from across the entire coffee shop. Just that kind of childish playfullness brought a smile right back to Steven's face. God, he would be so lost without her. He turned around just in time to see Jessica, Linda and some other bloke walking with them, directly on an intercept course with Steven's table. They sat down at once and Steven just couldn't wait anylonger.
"So whos's your friend?"
"His name is Mat.. and he's all mine, hands off!"
"That's alright, I have Jess..." Steve said grabbing Jessica's hand and mockingly immitated a sweet passionate kiss to her hand, which in turn she played it up by a forceful blush and the whole works. "But seriously... Lins.. I have a slight problem here that we need to talk about."
"Alright.. I'm all ears."
"Well. I got back from our campout, and my mum and dad said I was accepted to Oxford.."
"Problem? That's wonderful news! Oxford!!" Linda gleamed, taking another sip of her coffee and nestling in to Mat just a little bit more.
"Calm down, you don't know the entire details. Yes, I was accepted to Oxford, but not to the English campus. The one that I got accepted to is in Maryland.. in the US."
"But Steve!!" Jess said all of a sudden interested in what he was saying and not the cute waitor that had just walked past.
"Calm down a minute Steve..You have the opportunity to get far away from this dump and you are hesitating? You've always wanted out of this town.. you haven't even talked about staying here in Basingstoke except for one occasion, when John Dixon and you...no.. you can't let him rule this decision!!" Linda said nearly jumping over the table at Steve, for she was sitting opposite of him, Jessica at his left, the wall to his right and Mat next to Linda.
"Calm down Lins.. I was thinkging about breaking it off with John anyways. I rarely get to see him, and when I do I think he just wants the sex, he doesn't have the love anymore. But then I would also want to go to America of my own choice.. and I just don't think that I could sit there and tell Johnny that I'm leaving him for two different reasons. both of my own choice. He may not love me as much as he did a few years ago, but it would still hurt him.."
"Bullocks! It's already 13:48... I have two minutes to get to the other side of the centre.. I'll call you later Stevie.."
"Later Jess.."
"Steve.. will you stop thinking about everyone else for a few moments here and think for yourself? You're so f*cked up by all of this again I think you're splitting up. I mean.. you want to go to America for a few years, right?.."
"Yeah, but.."
"Yeah, well then go and don't look back.. not untill you have a degree at least. Cause if you dont' come back and at least visit me once or twice I will kill you.." Linda said with one of those begging commands. Steve just sat there before putting his final argument up.
"Linds, we've been best mates all our lives, and I love you like a sister. I couldn't live that long without you.."
"Well I'll only be a phone call away."
======================================
Jess stopped running right as she approached Marks' Mothers' car.
"Where were you?" Mark asked not so maddly, but he was a bit upset due to the one minute holdup.
"Sorry, I ran into Steve and Linda and Mat.."
"Oh.. Mat?"
"I'll explain later.." Jessica said right as she was about to close her door, when someones' hand stopped it from closing, giving her the worst fright in the world.
"Wait.. have you seen Steven?" Came a voice so extremely familiar, it could only belong to one person; John "F*cking Superman" Dixon.
"Yeah, hes' at the main coffee shope just the other side of the centre. Why?" Jess answered, given she was the only person in the car with his whereabouts.
"Thanks, bye.." John said and ran off in the direction of the shop, hoping to find the correct one before he was gone, oblivious to the fact that at that very moment Mat was driving Steve and Linda back to their houses.
=======================================
Meanwhile back at the Dixon residence, Raymond Dixon was still having quite a field day, untill finally Veronica Dixon had enough of the gay bashing, and hearing her son being bashed for being who he was, when instead of being put down for it he should have been loved just the same. It doesn't make him a better nor a worse person for being queer, and she surely wasn't going to make a big deal out of it; unlike her.. loving husband.
"What do you mean you've known? When did he tell you?" He yelled clear from the downstairs den area.
"Raymond.. Raymond.. RAYMOND!" Veronica screamed as loud as she could to interrupt her husbands babbling and infuriated ranting, along with exaturated pacing back and forth. "He didn't tell me, I just knew. And if you were any better a father than what you are, you would have known as well." And with that, she retired to her room for a mid day nap, loudly slamming and securly locking the door to the bedroom.
All of which gave Raymond time to let his wifes' stingent words sink in through the thick skull of his. But still, his son? A faggot? How could he not have seen this one coming, he would have sworn that John was such a sound bloke. He couldn't let some dirty queer live in his house..but that dirty queer was his son whome he loved. Who just an hour or two before had been the one that he wanted to carry on the family trade? His John wasn't John anymore.. it was someone's Johnny, and God help whoever it was that was defiling the Dixon name.
=============================================
"Of course, it can only get worse.. thank you very much." John said with total sarcasm to the waitress after describing Steven to her, only to get that he had left just a minute or two ago, along with some puzzled looks. This truely was, if nothing else can describe it, the day from hell. The day that John Dixon had sought so hard to completly avoid till he died had finally come and was in full bloom.. and was living up to it's name. First he comes out to his hippocritic homophobic father, then can't find Steven for help, got all his stuff out of his house, finally gets the whereabouts of Steven and can't even catch him now. The only thing left to do is go straight back to Steven's house and wait for him.. but how could he do that and look at Steven's mother straight in the face.. well maybe not straight.. but.. she had already guessed and figured it out before he came out to his parents. Was it that obvious, or was she just guessing and happened to hit the nail right on the head.
So many questions stabbed at John as he made his way back to his vehicle, with one route layed before him; find Steven Carter.. the love of his life.
