CHAPTER 5: Fresh faced New

Mat had just finished bringing his fire department turnout gear into his single bedroom appartment, when the telephone started to ring. He had half thought to just go ahead and let it ring, but then he realized it might be Linda. So like a fool, he rushed over to the table which the phone was placed upon, stubbed his toe along the way; but was able to answer.
"5289."

"Mat?"

"Linda?"

"Hi"

"Hi...ouch.."

"Oh no.. what's happened? Are you dying?"

"Calm down Lins, I just stubbed my toe durning my flight of the bumblebee to get the phone..."

"Did you just call me Lins?"

"Yes...was it wrong of me?"

"No.. just.. only my best mate calls me that.."

"Oh."

"Well look, what are you doing tomorrow? Do you have to go to the fire station, or can we go to the cinemas?"

"I'm pretty sure that I actually have a day off tomorrow. And I would love nothing more than to spend it with a lovely girl like you."

After nearly dropping the phone from that response in Mat, Linda was finally able to manage a return. "Right, well I'll ring tomorrow with the time of the flick. Cheers."
And with that, Linda hung up.
==========================================================
The birds resumed their chirping after a slight interruption, the fresh nightly dew on the blades of grass apparent, the wonderful aroma of summer. At last, the dawning of a new day came about, and found Steven Carter sleeping in, thankful for his nice, loving soft bed as opposed to the hard ground of the wild outdoors, or the semi rigid mattress of his college issued dorm room bed. Finally he was able to coerce his self to raise and face the rest of the world; and even worse, the decision that his father would be wanting as the first words out of his lips.

Sure, he wanted to go to America; it would be something different and no one would know about him.. no one would pick on him. But then again, he's British; how could he just abandon his home and his country simply to make his own self feel better? Could he really just turn his back on everything that he has worked so hard for in his entire life; just to try and rebuild it? But then what about him and Linda, what would become of them? Mark, Wendy, Jessica? Even worse, could he really tell John that he would have to stop seeing him for two reasons, both of his choice?
==========================================================
The waking at the Dixon house wasnt' as pleasant as John had hoped for his first time back in nearly a month. He thought perhaps he would be able to sleep in, or maybe even his parents would be kind and take him out to breakfast like he had done the last time he was home. But none of that was to happen this morning. John's father had just bellowed up the stairs for him to wake up and come down. By the time that John had pulled some sweatpants on, a t-shirt and a new pair of socks, his father was already in his doorway.

"Didn't you hear me calling you to come downstair?"

"How couldn't I have? Why do I have to be up this early anyways?"

"You'll see. But you can't go looking like that. You need to wear a suit. With a real shirt and tie; about what you wore back when you were in secandry school.. perhaps not the jacket though..."

"Dad, where are you taking me?"

"Just get ready son and be down in a half hour. You need a shower I presume as well."

And with that Johns' father left and shut the door behind him, and went down the main stairs of the Dixon manor. John went ahead took a shower and got dressed as prescribed by his father, and went down the stairs with just under three minutes to spare. His mother was there as well but dressed in her morning robe, obviously not to accompany John and his father on their.. outing.
