CHAPTER 16: From Fear to Anger

The sun light shining from the window woke John up. He rubbed his eyes trying to clear his vision. He didn’t know how long he had been sleep. All he remembered was sitting next to Steve’s bed, waiting for Brenda to come to. She hadn’t. He remembered Steve falling asleep, remembered checking the time. Wondering if they should have taken her to the hospital.

John stood up, stretched his arms, and then looked over at Brenda. She was still asleep. They’d dressed her in Steve’s t-shirt and sweat pants. Put her on the bed and covered her with the blanket. She moan a few times, whispered a few words, but never woke up.

John looked around the room, Steve was nowhere in site. Looking back at Brenda once more, John left the room, heading down the stairs. He found Steve in the kitchen slipping on a cup of tea.
“Hey, when did you get up?” John asked. He kissed Steve on the cheek, than took the seat next to him.

“A little while ago, She doing any better?” Steve asked.

“Still sleeping. I’m worried about her.” John said. “Maybe we should have took her to the hospital.”

“We’ll wait a little longer, if she doesn’t come to, we’re called and have them come here.” Steve said. He slipped on his tea, He was just as nervous as John.

“Steve, stay with me. Don’t leave me. I need you.” John said. A single tear slid down his cheek. Steve released his cup. Put one hand in John’s and used the other to wipe the tear.

“I’m not going anywhere. We’ll get thru this together.” Steve promised.
Steve kissed his lips. Held his face in his hands. He traced the lines around John’s eyes. They made him look older, showed the worry he felt.

“Where am I?” The heard Brenda yell from the bedroom.

Both rushed up the stairs, as they entered the room, one of Steve’s shoe came flying at them.

“Stay away from me.” Brenda yelled. Pure terror was in her eyes. Tears stained her cheeks. She huddled in the corner between the bed and nightstand. “Please leave me alone.” She cried.

“B, it’s me. It’s ok. It’s me and Steve.”

“John.” She wept. “John please help me.”

“It’s ok. Brenda it’s ok.” He whispered in her ear. He wrapped his arms her. Led her back to the bed, laid her down. Covered her trembling body with the blanket.

“Steve, get her some water.” John commanded.
Steve returned seconds later with a glass of water and two pain pills. He handed both to John.

“Here B, take this.” He helped her sit up, held the water while she swallowed the pills. After a few moments and a few more tears, Brenda pulled herself together. She looked over; saw Steve standing by the wall. She saw the hold left by the shoe she’d thrown.

“Oh, Steve I’m so sorry. I’ll pay for that.” She promised

“Don‘t worry about it. How are you feeling?” he asked.

“My head hurts. “ she moaned.

“Lay down. You need to rest.”

“No, It hurts worse when I lay. Just let me sit up.”

“Do you need anything?” Steve asked.

“No.” She said. She pulled the blanket over her head. She started to cry.

“Brenda, tell us what happen.” John said.

“I---I can’t.” She cried.

“It’s ok B. Tell me.”

“Where did you go when you left John?” Steve asked. He took a seat next to her on the bed.

“We. We took a walk down by the park. He was sweet, kind of romantic. He held my hand and talked to me, I didn’t know. Oh lord I didn’t know he was like that.” She cried.

“Take you time.” John told her. He held on to her hand.

“ I told him I was tried, I wanted to sit down. So we sat by the men’s loo you know on that bench. We talked, than he kissed me. It felt good, to have some one want me. I let him touch me, just up here.” She said putting to her breast. “Before things could get to out of hand, I stopped him. Told him I wanted to walk. Some how we ended up by the woods. I didn’t think anything of it. He held my hand, told me how beautiful I was. He kissed me, than tried to put his hand in the wrong places. I made him stop. Told him he was going to far, but he wouldn’t stop. I pushed him back. But he kept coming. I slapped him. It made him mad. He punched me in the stomach.” She started to cry harder, she paused. “ I fell to the ground, he held me there, wouldn’t let me get up. He held my hands with his knees, I couldn’t move. “

“Come on, you can do it.” Steve urged.

“He heard someone coming, started to freak out, I started to scream, He put his hand over my month. He jumped up pulled me into the woods. I don’t know how far in because so much dirty was getting into my face I had to close my eyes. When he finally stopped, he got on top of me and ripped my shirt and skirt off. He couldn’t get my under clothes off, so he had to let my hands go. He was on top of me, so he thought I couldn’t go anywhere. I searched for a rock, something I could use to hit him. Next to me I found a huge rock. I slowly picked it up; when he wasn’t looking I hit him with it. It must have knocked him out because he didn’t get up. I got up and ran as fast as I could. I didn’t know where I was, but I ended up back where we came in. My purse was still there, my cell was in. I grabbed it and ran towards the street. That’s when I realized I didn’t have anything on, so I stopped at the bench, hade behind it and called you.” she finished.

“What happen after that. We found you unconscious.”

“I thought I heard someone coming, thought it was him, I got scared, must have passed out. John, I’m going to find him and kill him.” Her sorrow had turned into anger so fast it surprised John and Steve.

“Why am I sitting here like a cry baby, No, he will pay for this.” She said as she moved from the bed towards the door. Before she could make it pain took over her body. She fell to her knees.
John ran to her. “Wow, Brenda sit down, Leave this to me,” He pulled her back to the bed. “Steve when are you parents coming home.”

“Sometime tomorrow. Don’t worry, they’ll understand. You can stay as long as you need to. John we should get her to a doctor now.”

“No, no doctor. I’m fine.” Brenda said. “Oh, maybe not.” she said falling back on the bed.

“I’m going home to get you clothes, than your going to see someone.” John didn’t give her a chance to protest, he was out the door.
