CHAPTER 12: Steve Again
The Basingstroke parade was the biggest event of the year, and every inch of the sidewalk was occupied. The music was basting from either side. The crowd was hype; everyone seemed to enjoy the festival.
Steve moved thru the crowd searching for Linda. He hadn’t seen her in over a week and he wanted to straight things out. Neither of them wanted to discuss what happen that night in Steve’s bedroom. So they avoided each other, both to embarrass with themselves to face the other. Sorrow and love between friends had led to an unforgettable, yet regrettable night of passion.
Steve surveyed the crowd, not seeing Linda anywhere. He gave up, decided to enjoy what was left of his night.
He watched the floats passed, the music loud and fast, kids dancing in the streets. He walked around, passing happy groups of people, talking and laughing amongst themselves. He felt out of place with his better half.
He made is way over to the vending table to buy a coke, slip money to and older woman and looked for a place to sit. He spotted Jessica at a table; she was alone so he made his way over to her.
“Hey Steve.” Jessica smiled “Having fun?”
“Lots. Where’s Kevin?” Steve asked, he didn’t want to get comfortable if Kevin would be back.
“Somewhere around here, I came with Wendy.” She said. “Have a seat.” She pointed to the chair next to her.
Steve took it, still searching for Linda as he set down.
“Where’s Linda?”
“Not sure, I haven’t talked to her.” Steve said.
“Oh, why?” Jessica asked not knowing the seriousness of the situation.
“Can you keep a secret?” He asked her. He needed to talk to other person, he’d wanted to confined in Brenda, but feared she’d tell John.
“Steve you know I can. What’s up?”
“Linda and I. We um, did it.” He blurted out.
“What. No. Linda, and you. How did that happen?” She asked. Jessica was deep in shock.
“It just did. Now I can’t find her, I really need to talk to her.”
“Oh god Steve, this is kind of weird. Funny, But weird.” She said, holding back laughter.
“It’s not funny Jess.” Steve said. But when he thought about it, it was amusing.
“Steve, that’s like me telling you I slept with Wendy. You’d laugh your ass off.”
“Shut up Jess.” He laughed. For the first time in a few days, Steve felt ok.
“So where have you been all week. Every time I’ve called, your mum said you were out.”
“Out with Brenda.”
“John’s Brenda. How did that happen?”
Steve told he about his walk to John’s house. He and Brenda had spent the entire week together, walking talking and hanging out in his room.
“Watch what you say, that’s John’s girlfriend.” Jessica warned.
“I know.”
“I’ve only met her a few times. But she seems really nice.”
“She thinks you don’t like her.”
“Why would she think that?”
“She thinks all girls under 30 hate her.”
“Oh, I’ll have to make an effort to get to know.” Jessica said.
“Hey Steve.” Wendy said appear out of nowhere.
“Hi Wendy. Well I’m going to head back home. Jessica I’ll call you tomorrow ok.” Steve said standing up and pushing his chair back against the table.
“Ok, I hope everything works out.” Jessica said, this time letting the laugh spill from her lips.
