CHAPTER 10: Personal Intension

Steve woke in time to watch Linda leave his bedroom.

“Linda, where you going?” He yelled

“Home, I’ll be back later.” She shouted back.

Steve rested his head on the pillow. His head was acing from the amount of wine he’d consumed over the weekend. Three days of partying was enough for him. He looked at the clock beside his bed. 9am, his parents should be home any time now and there was a lot of cleaning to be done. He looked around his bedroom, it was a mess. Clothes, food wrappers and wine bottles cover every inch of the food. It was obvious he and Linda had spent the entire weekend in this small area of the Carter home, only leaving to restock on food and of course wine.

Steve stretched, groaning from the pain of his stiff inactive body. He got up, washed and dressed himself. After a few minutes of relaxing he attacked his house work, being sure to throw away any evidence of there weekend of bless.

By 12 Steve was wondering the streets of Basingstroke, finding himself in front of the Dixon estate. He didn’t know why he’d come, his feet just led him there. He walked passed quickly, hoping and not hope to catch a glimpse of John.

“Hey, Steve Carter right?” a voice from behind him asked.

He jumped startled by the unexpected company. “Um yeah.” he answered.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.” Brenda said. “What are you doing in this neck of the woods?”

“Taking a walk. You out for a run?” he asked noticing the sweats she wore.

“Back from a run. Sure you’re not looking for someone?” She questioned.

“Like I said, just taking a walk. Well I’d better get going. Nice to meet you again. Brenda.”

“Brenda Morris. Why the rush. Wanna walk and talk for a while.” She asked.

She prayed he’d say yes, the last week bored to her. Hanging with John and his bone headed friends were beginning to take its toll on her brain. Besides, this was the guy John talked so fondly of, it would be nice to get to know him. Ok, she was a bit nosey.

“It would be nice to hang with someone other than John and Kevin. They’re driving me crazy.” She laughed

“They can’t be all that bad.” Steve said.

“If I have to hear another sex joke, I think I’m going to bust.” She said.

“Kevin’s not the sharpies tool in the box, is he.” Steve joked.

“That’s an understatement.” She responded

Steve thought for a second. Why was this young woman so anxious to hang out with him. Did John send her. No, how could he have known Steve would walk by his house. He was a little uncomfortable, he questioned her motives, but this would give Steve a chance to get information on John. Brenda had her motives and Steve had his.

“Why not. I have nothing else to do.” He said.

“Oh thanks.” She laughed. “Just let me grab my purse, I’ll meet you over there.” She said pointing towards bushes at the end of the street.

Brenda ran into the Dixon house, she grabbed her purse and two soda’s out of the refrigerator. As she was leaving she bumped into John.

“Where are you going in such a hurry?” He asked.

“Just taking a walk.” She said “What do you have planed for the day?”

“Kevin and I are going to work out for a few hours. I was trying to find you to see if you’d like to join us.”

“No I’ll pass. I already have plans.” She said as she walked out the door. “Here you go.” She said handing Steve a soda.

“Thanks.” He said as they started to walk.

“So, what are you majoring in?” She asked.

“No sure, still trying to find my interested.” He said. “What about you?”

“Psychology.”

“Psychology.” He said with a bit of surprise.

“Don’t look so shocked.” She laughed.

“What made you pick Psychology?” he asked

“I like getting inside peoples head.”

“Is that why you’re here walking with me?”

“No, I’ve got a good feeling about you.” she answered.

“Than you must not know my rep.” Steve said, fearing after he’d told her, she wouldn’t have such a
good feeling.

“What, your gay. Trust me, that’s Kevin’s favorite subject.” Brenda snorted.

“If you dislike him so much, why hang out with them?”

“He’s John’s best friend.”

“Why not hang with Jessica. You’ve met her right?”

“Yeah, I’ve met her. Honey most women don’t like me. They think I’m to much.” She said

“Are you?” He asked.

“Most of the time, yes.” She laughed.

“John seems to love you.” Steve said, the words burning his throat.

“We have a lot in common. But he’s in love with…..” She let her words trail off. If she let the
cat out of the bag, John would kill her. It was just so obvious Steve still cared about John. She
wanted to put the two back together, but her heart and head stopped her.

“Wanna get some coffee?” Steve asked pretending as if he hadn’t heard her.

“What is it with you people and coffee.” She laughed.

They stopped at a local shop, grabbed two coffees and continued on their walk.
An hour later they were in Steve’s living room, watching TV, joking about Kevin and Dave.

“You know, this has been the best time I’ve had since I’ve been here.” Brenda said.

“I enjoyed it to.” Steve said. “ I don’t understand how anyone could dislike you.”

“I do. I dislike me a lot of the time. I have this thing about saying whatever is on my mind.”
She laughed

“Linda, you know the girl with me that night in the park, she’s just like that. I value what she has to say, even if it comes across rude.” He laughed

“She seems like a nice person. Have you known her long.”

“Just about all my life, or the part of my life that matters.”

“Can I ask you a question?”

“Sure.”

“What made you come out. Tell people you were gay.”

“I just got tiered of hiding. I was in a relationship and I couldn’t be happy I got to the
breaking point.” He looked up, he didn’t know if John had come out to her.

“It’s cool. I know what happen between you and John. There’s very little I don’t know about him.”

“Oh, I wonder why you were so nice to me.”

“Steve, I meant what I said earlier. I have a good feeling about you and spending the last few
hours with you, I like you.”

“Thanks, I like hanging with you too.”

“Steven.” Mrs. Carter yelled from the back door.

“In here mum.” He yelled back.

“Steven honey we’re back. Oh you have company.” She said as she spotted Brenda on the sofa next
to Steve.

“Mum this is Brenda Morris, Brenda this is my mum.”

“Hello Mrs. Carter, it’s a pleasure to meet you.

“It’s nice to meet you dear. Are from around here.”

“I’m just visiting.”

“Relative?” Mrs. Carter asked

“No, I’m staying with John Dixon and his parents. John and I attend Oxford together.” Brenda told her.

“Mum, where’s dad?” Steve asked

“He had to go to the shop. He’ll be back by dinner. Brenda are you staying for dinner?” Mrs. Carter asked.

“Not sure, Steve is it ok.”

“Of course it’s ok. You’ll stay. I won’t take no for an answer.” Mrs. Carted said firmly.

“Thank you, Mrs. Carter. I’d love too.” Brenda said.

“Well I’d better get started. “ she said heading into the kitchen.

“You’re mother is so sweet.” Brenda said.

“Yeah she is. You feel like going next door?” Steve asked

“Sure, can I use your phone first?”

“Yeah, in the hall to the right.”

“Thanks.”

Brenda went into the hall to use the phone. She dialed John’s cell phone number.”

“Honey I won’t be there for dinner tonight ok.”

“Where are you?” He asked.

“No where, just around.” She said, eyeing the living room where Steve waited.

“No really B, what’s going on. You’re acting a little weird.”

“Hey, J, I have to go. I’ll see you tonight.” She said as she hang up the phone.

She knew he would be pissed if he found out she was at Steve’s. He’d think she pulled her match making routine, something she’d done many times before. She didn’t know why, but she liked Steve. He was sweet and caring, she also couldn’t take other night of partying with Kevin and Dave.
