CHAPTER 6: Groveling
"You sure you don't wanna go Steve?" Linda said pleadingly as Graham and Sarah Carter walked out to the car to head for the funeral.
"I'm sure Lins. It will just be more family that I dont' want to be around in the first place." Steve said as he retrieved a coca-cola from the refrigerator. "Want one?" Linda shook her head no as she began to speak.
"But Steve, she was your nan. You owe it to her to go."
"She's gone Lins. She's not gonna know."
"But.."
"If you don't stop, I'll go get another man back at the cottage!" Steve teased while heading for the front door. He had had enough of that emotional stuff about how he is supposed to go to the funeral and everything, just because it was his nan. Yes, he is gay, but that doesn't mean he is all emotional all the time. "You wanna go catch a flick at the cinema? I hear there's a new movie there.. I forget which one."
"No, I don't feel like walking and my brother has the car."
"Fine then, we'll just have to..." Steve was interrupted by the ringing of the telephone.
"Answer it you prat!" Linda squealed, and then giggled.
"Hello?" Steve answered and got no reply. Then the line suddenly went dead, and Steve hangs it back on its' hook. "Sorry Lins, must have had the wrong number, it went dead soon as I picked it up..."
And again the phone goes crazy, and Steve picks it up.
"Yes?" He asked in an almost disturbed manner.
"Is Steven there?" Asked a voice that sounded so foriegn.. so foreign... ah! There is only one person he knows who talks like that!
"Speaking."
"Hi, it's Justin Mekins from school.."
"Yes, I know.. I haven't many friends that have an american accent..."
"Shh... I don't have an accent, you do." Justin teased as he broke out into a little giggle fit. "Well, I wanted to know how everything was. I called you when I got home but you weren't there, and I didn't want to leave a message cause I didn't know how you're parents would take it, and.."
"It's ok, they're cool about it now... kinda. I was offered a job to talk about my life and living it as just being out, and gay. But my dad said no."
"Oh. Sorry man.."
"It's ok. I'd let you talk to them, but they're off at my Nans' funeral."
"Holy crap! I'm sorry man, if you need me to, I can let you go."
Steve didn't even have to think for a response to that. "No, that's alright. I'm sure she's happy wherever she is now. Did you want to maybe go and see a cinema or something? My best mate Linda and I were about to go.."
"Cinema?"
"Oh sorry. See a movie."
"Oh goodness, I really need to catch up on my slang. Let me call my dad at his work and see if I can. Call you right back."
"Right... cheers!" Steve gleamed as he hung up.
"Steve, who was that?" Linda said with an extremely puzzled look on her face, as Steve was avoiding all attempts during the actual call to pay attention to her constant begging of information about the phone call.
"That was that hunk Justin Mekins that I told you about from school."
"Steve, babe, I'm not goin to the cinema.. I told you I'm tired and don't want to walk...oh wait.. you just want to be alone with him.. you little wanker. I'll go."
"Oh why thanks Lins." Steve gloated and giggled right along with Linda, until the phone rang. Now Steve thinking it could only be Justin right back again answered in a special way.
"So can you go with me?" He said, but heard no reply. Was there something wrong perhaps? Did the line go dead again? No.
"Steve..."
"Johnny...you can't call me here."
"Steve, we need to talk. And this is the only way that I could think of. I got a new car and drove past your house to talk to you, but you werent' there. Is everything alright?"
"Not exactly."
"My god, what happened?"
"My Nan died last night up in London. I was rushed up there and because I had no love to go with me, my best mate Linda went with me. Bye." Steve was about to hang up the phone when he heard John pleading for him not to hang up, and of course the look on Linda's face told the tale of agreement with John. Why not. He's already hurt Steven as much as he could, what could listening to him have to hurt?
"I'm still here." Steven said reluctantly, frowning to the peanut gallery.
"Good. I want you to know that I love you."
"Johnny.."
"And I'm willing to make sacrifices to have you back."
"Johnny. What will you give up? You're friends that you care about more than me? Your image?"
"What image?"
"Like you don't know you're own nickname.. John 'Superman' Dixon..."
"People call me that?"
"Yeah..." Steven trailed off.. not sure of what to say next. He probably wanted John back just as much as John wanted him back, but he would never even tell Linda that one. He just didn't want to be hurt again like that.
"Steve, you still there?"
"No, I moved to France."
"Seriously. What do you think?"
"I think that you need to tell your parents, tell Kevin, tell who ever you need to. Just so you'd feel comfortable in public knowing that other people know you're gay..."
"Steve.."
"No. I haven't hidden for what.. 5 years now, not telling anyone except for Linda here about who I really am, and what I really love. Now I've told everyone that matters to me who I am, and if you really still love me, you won't care about anyone else except for yourself and me. Cause that's the only thing that used to matter to me."
"Steve.."
"Look, I gotta go, I got another call.." And without another word before his tear ducts could join in with the rest of the water works, he hit the flash button and answered the other line. "Hello?"
"Hey, it's Justin again."
"Hey. Can you go?"
"Nah, my dads' really being a dick.. oh..sorry man."
"No worries mate... I guess I'll talk to you later then?"
"Steve, I wanted to talk to you about what you saw between Jess and me.."
"Well I gotta go now Justin. Cheers!" Steve hung up quickly before he could hear anymore about what he saw just the other day. Luckily for him, Sarah and Graham had agreed to allow Steven to stay home from school today.
"So do I Steve. Time for dinner." Linda said with a weird look in her eye, and kissed Steve on the cheek and left the Carter residence.
