CHAPTER 8: Defending the Men

“Steve we’ve been here for over an hour. Aren’t you ready to go yet?” Linda asked

“Linda, don’t tell me your tiered. That’s a first.” Steve said

“Steve, it’s late. Anyway, why do you like sitting here?” She asked looking around

“I don’t know, comfortable I guess. Lind’s, you can leave if you want.”

“No, I’ll stay. Besides you need me.”

“Like a hole in the head.” He joked

“Oh that’s nice.” Linda shot back. “You want to see him don’t you?”

“See who?” Steve asked, pretending to be confused.

“John. Steve, don’t be a jerk.”

“No, he’s the furthest thing from my mind.”

“Liar. I can see it on your face. Steve, you’re annoying me.”

“I always annoy you. “

“Why don’t you talk to him? It’s obvious you’re not over the whole thing.”

“Linda, you talk about it more than I do. Besides, I have nothing to say to him.”

“Steve, your still hurt, tell him that.”

“It was three years ago. He’s moved on, I’ve moved on. That’s that. Now can we talk about
something else?”

“No, we have to talk about this.”

“Why?”

“Because John’s right there and he’s coming this way.”

“Shit.” Steve said.

What is this the twilight zone. Twice in one day. No mater what he does, he can’t get this man out of his mind, now his life. What should he do, run, talk to him. Steve was confused.

“Linda, we have to get out of here.”

“It’s to late, they saw us. Now’s your chance Steve, talk to him.”

“Wait are you the same Linda that told me “Get over it; let him go” What’s with the sudden change of heart.”

“I’m sick of it. For some reason you can’t get over this. This might be the only way you can move
on with your life.”

“Linda, your such a hip….”

“Hi.” John said stepping in front of them.

“Hi.” Steve said. “You remember Linda.”

“Um, yeah. How are you?”

“Fine.” Linda responded.

“This is Brenda.”

“Hello, nice to meet you.” Brenda said.

“Steve, you have a minute, I’d um, like to talk to you.”

“Um.” Steve looked over at Linda who nodded. “Sure.” He said standing.

“I hope he doesn’t hurt him again.” Linda said watching the two walk away.

“I agree, John doesn’t need that. He needs more” Brenda said.

“John, who the hell is talking about John. Steve is the one who needs more.” Linda said, almost yelling.

“Steve, please. John had a hard time getting over the pain he caused.” Brenda said pointing abruptly towards Steve.

“Oh, bloody hell. What has he been telling you?” John hit him. Hurt him. What do you think that did. How do you think it made Steve feel?

“John told me everything. I know what he did. I also know Steve tried to push him into something he wasn’t ready for. That hurt him. Steve not sticking by him.”

“Whatever. If he ever try’s to hurt Steve again, I’ll kill him.” Linda said

“You can try.” Brenda said, stepping closer to Linda.

“Is that a threat?” Linda asked advancing towards Brenda.

“Oh no honey.” Brenda laughed. “That’s nothing but a promise.”
