CHAPTER 4: Twist the Knife a bit, would ya?
Almost feeling the tears swelling up to run out and over his cheeks, he just turned and ran as he heard Jessica and Justin calling after him, and trying to catch him. How could he have been so stupid? But, his clumsy legs got the better of himself, and he closed his eyes hoping it would all just go away. Of course it didn't and when he opened his eyes, Jess and Justin were there to help him up.
"Steve, what's wrong?" Jessica asked with a puzzled look, completely oblivious to his feelings for Justin, who just stood there looking innocent.
"Nothing..." He tryied to cover up, realizing they didn't know. "Just had to go to the loo, and I figured I'd catch you later anyways."
"Oh. Ok." Jess said with an akwardness in her voice. "You remember Justin Mekins from our history class, don't you?"
How could he forget? "Yeah, I think so. What happened, you weren't in class today?"
Finally speaking about what Steve was desperately wanting to know, "I overslept. Ya know, still trying to get used to the time change. I've only been here three days, my dad has been here longer to set up our house, and my schooling and whatnot. It's noon here, back home its only seven in the morning."
"Oh." Not what he hoped for, but never the less, he had his answer. Saved by the bell. "Well, I'd better get to class.. Math, my worst subject... don't want to be late for all of them today." He added to try and cover up his embarassment.
"I'll walk you there, mines not too far from there." Justin offered.
"That's alright, I think I can manage..." And walked off on his own, leaving them behind.
"That's odd..." Jess said just out of earshot of Steven, "He's usually very welcome to being with friends, especially after what happened friday. Hasn't anyone told you yet?"
"Yes. Kevin Grainger informed me of his being the.. how'd he put it? Oh yes, the 'local queer'."
"Kevin is an ass. You should stay away from him."
"Oh trust me, I am. I got him good though. I told him that I was bi, because he was startin on Steve, and he ran off to his other pals like a dog with its' tail between it's legs." They both laughed for a bit as they started off to class. Then it struck Jessica.
"Oh no."
"What?"
"You said that in front of Steve that you were bi?"
"Yea.. so?"
"Well, yesturday he was only staring at you the whole class period long."
"Oh, I didn't notice. That would explain why he was so quick to give me his number."
Jessica just thought for a minute or so, and then before going into her classroom, she added; "And then seeing us together.. oh no. I think he likes you."
Justin chuckled and walked on, and left Jess to only wonder about why he just chuckled.
--------------------------------------------
John Dixon stood with Kevin, Dave and a few other blokes talking about getting together later for a jog for a bit. John listened as best he could, but his mind was elsewhere indeed. What would it take to try and resolve the problems between Steve and himself? Or even.. could he do anything at all? Then with all the worst fate, Carter walked by on his way home from school. Looking so dejected, what could have done that? The talk that they had had at lunch? He was just about to get out of the huddle, when someone else approached Steven. It was that new kid, Justin. God only knows what they've been up to; yesturday the note, no clue of last night. What I wouldn't give to be him right now.
"You comin boss?" Dave asked.
"Yeah." John said after takin a moment.
---------------------------------------------
"Windy, do you think that is why he ran away?" Asked Mark after being filled in by Jessica just a moment before.
"Well, it is a valid reason..."
"It's all my fault."
"Jess, don't say things like that" Mark said, with Windy adding in a, "Yeah, it's not your fault."
"Yes it is. I was the first to know about Steve. He trusted me and I went and did something like this. I think he should hate me now." Jess said now, barely getting it off her tounge because of choking on tears so bad.
"No..." Windy consoled. "He will understand that you didnt' mean to pick that hunk up. He ran into you, remember?"
"Yeah, but I.."
"What?" Said Mark. "You should have read Steves' mind before talking to Justin?" That brought out a tiny bit of a chuckle from Jess who was still a bit upset.
"Yeah. Maybe you're right." She added dully underneath her snot-rag. They all start walking away from the school, and start to make plans for the evening.
-----------------------------------------------
"Steve, wait up!" Justin called, hoping not to draw too much attenion to himself. "I said wait up a sec.."
"Sorry Justin.. I uh.. I didn't hear you."
"Look. Jess and I were talking, and we think we know why you ran away from us at lunch."
"I already told you, I had to run to the loo." Steve pleaded, hopin that Justin wasn't right.
"Well you can say what you want, but I'll stick to what Jess and I thought of. But I don't think that this is the proper place to talk about it.. not with everyone around and all."
"What do you suggest then?" Steve asked, with only a glimmer of hope.
"Do you live far from here? We could talk for a bit. Maybe even have a cup of coffee."
Steven was deffinately up for it, even not knowing what to expect. But then, the unexpected happened.
Everyone was gawking at the georgous red corvette as it pulled up to the curb with a screeching halt. In it was the familiar well built lady with movie star sunglasses, and radio about full volume.
"Steve, come quick. Your mum sent me, your nan is in hospital." She blurted out as quickly as she could.
"Sorry Justin, I'll have to take a rain check I'm afraid."
"Don't worry about it. I'll call ya later." Justin said understandably, and watched the exaust being coughed back up from his lungs as the rebuilt corvette left tire marks upon the roadtop.
