CHAPTER 5: Welcome Home
John pulled up to his parent’s brick home. He and Brenda grabbed their bags and headed up the stairs, using his key, he unlocked the door.
“Mum, dad we’re here.” He yelled
“So am I suppose to be your girlfriend?” Brenda whispered.
“Sort of, you mind?”
“No, but don’t expected me to be faithful…”
Brenda’s words were cut short, as John’s parents walked into the room. Money was written all over them, they wore it like a cheap suit, or in their case and expensive one.
Suddenly Brenda felt out of place, not that she was a stranger to money. Hell her parents had plenty of it, they thrived it. She grow up with the best of everything, anything she wanted or needed. She was privileged, as her parents kept reminding her. They made sure she had the “proper exposure”, maybe that’s why she jumped on the chance to come to Basintstroke. It was betted than going home. Even with her proper background, she felt slightly out of place. Not that it showed.
“Hello dear, how was your drive?” John’s mother asked
“Good, hey dad.” John said shaking his father’s hand.
“ Hello John.”
“This is Brenda Morris.”
“Hello Mr., and Mrs. Dixon. It is a pleasure to meet you.”
“Hello Brenda, it’s very nice to meet you.” Mrs. Dixon said.
“Hello Brenda, I see your making a man out of John.” Mr. Dixon commented
“I’m trying.” She answered.
“Will we’re going to get unpacked. “
“ Ok, again nice to meet you Brenda, I hope we have a chance to talk later.” Mrs. Dixon said
“I’m sure we will.” Brenda said as she followed John to his room.
They unpacked, taking a moment to relax. While Brenda explored the room, she came across an old photo of John. He stood on the track field, wearing his uniform, next to other boy. He had his head thrown back laughter.
“This is a nice picture of you. Who’s the other boy?”
“No one.” He said before snatching the picture from her hands.
“Wow, clam down boy. It was just a questions.”
“Sorry, I’d rather not talk about him.” He said looking at the picture then putting it face down on the bed.
“Babe, what’s wrong?” Brenda asked, noticing the distanced look in his eyes.
“Nothing, just bad memories.”
“Wait, is he Steve, Steve what’s his name?”
“Yeah, that’s him.”
“Kind of cute.” She said as she picked the picture up. “I take it you not over him.”
“Yes I am, as long as I don’t see, hear or think about him.”
“Oh, hon., it’s ok. Wanna get out of here?”
“Sure, where?”
“Show me the around We’ll get something to drink, and paint the town red.”
“Sounds like a good idea to me.”
An hour later they were walking pass the cinema, checking for showtime’s. Not very interested in anything, the decided to grab a bite at Mc Donald’s.
“What do you want?” Brenda asked
“Burger, I’ll get it.”
“No, I’ll take care of it. Find a seat. “ She told him.
“John, Johnny.” Came a familiar voice. John turned to find Kevin and Dave sitting at a table
behind him.
“Kevin, hey mate. How’s it going?” John asked taking seat next to his old friends.
“Good, how you been?”
“Great. Who is that?” Kevin asked pointing to Brenda.
“Brenda.”
“She with you, nice, very nice.” Kevin commented as she walked towards them. “I’d love to poke that.”
“Here you go.” Brenda said handing the food to him.
“B, this is Kevin and Dave. The guys I told you about.”
“Yes I remember, how you doing. “
“Great now that you’re here.” Kevin said, looking her up and down.
“Aren’t you getting married?” Brenda asked
“Yes, but you can change all that.”
“Oh, she’s a lucky lady.” She said taking a seat next to John.
“Kev, what happen to your face?”
“Carter decked him.” Dave laughed.
“ Carter, how did that happen.”
“The little asshole sucker punched me.” Kevin said, rubbing the bump that formed on his face.
“Speaking of Carter, isn’t that him now. With Jessica.
