CHAPTER 2: Steve

Steven Carter watched as Linda drove her red convertible through the town known as Basingstoke. The familiar streets brought back childhood memories and delightful tales. It was good to be home, the pressures of collage had taken its toll on Steve and he welcomed the boring hometown he once despised.

It had only been a year since his departure, but it seemed like a lifetime. There he was a completely different person. Once a young, naïve boy, stuck in a lifetime of daydreams and wishes, grown into a young man, with stores and successes of his own. He was coming back to a town that reminded unchanged. The same homes and shopping malls, the same parks and schools. Yes Basingstoke was a place you desired so much as a child to leave, only to return.

Linda pulled the car into her drive way. Turning the key she waited a moment before opening the door.

“Are you going to sit in the car all day Steven?” She asked

“No Linda.” He said stepping out. “

“What do you want to do tonight?” She asked

“Sleep.” He answered

“Steven Carter, you not going to stay in all night. We’re going out. To the cinema maybe.” She said grabbing her bags and heading into her house.”

“Hey Lind’s.” Steve yelled after her, but he was to late, she’d already shut the door.

He signed, and headed into his own home. He was greeted by his parents. Who hugged him and inquired about his grades. He made a quick get away, telling them he needed to rest.

He entered his room; a place once filled with pain and secrets, now only a small reminder of what he so dearly wanted to forget.

Being back in this room, brought a smile to his face. He looked around, the same pictures and posted draped the walls, reminding him of his high school years. The last two years of high school were his best. Coming out of the closet lift him free to live his life and love himself. Although he’d trade those years for one year in collage.
The thought of going away to school frighten him. Not knowing what to expected. But the fear was soon replaced with excitement. He’d never known such freedom. Linda showed him a world he never knew existed. He came and went as pleased, new faces replaced the old disappointed and disgusted faces of his high school peers. He was shocked to discover the society of gay life. No more hiding in the men’s room hoping for a quick one in the woods. It overwhelmed him.

Looking over he noticed his suitcases, reluctantly he picked them up and started to unpack.
“Steven, can I come in.” His mother called from the hall.

“Come in mum. “ he answered

“Stephen, why didn’t you tell me Jessica and Kevin were getting married?” She asked as she entered his room handing him the local newspaper.

“Because I didn’t know.” He told her, staring down at it, the caption read, Wedding Of The year. The article was full of details on the wedding

He and Jessica stayed very close friends over the years, and talked often. He wondered why she didn’t tell him about this. He picked up the phone and dialed her number.

“Hi Steve, you back.” Jessica asked

“Yeah, just got in. Hey Jess, I heard your getting married to Kevin.”

“Oh, yeah that. All of Basingstoke should know by now. Stupid newspaper.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked.

“I was going to, but Steve you hate Kevin, it’s not like your best friend or anything. “

“Still Jess, you know I’m happy for you. Not matter how I feel about Kevin. You can tell me anything.

“Oh, don’t get sapping on me. Fancy doing something tonight?” She asked

“Yeah, how about a movie, Lind’s and I are going to the cinema.”

“Great, after dinner?”

“Yeah, but hey I have to go, mums is calling me.” He said

“Ok, see you tonight. Bye. Oh Steve.” She yelled into the phone.”

“Yeah.”

“Um, I just thought you should know, John Dixon is coming home for the summer.”

“Thanks Jess, but I’m over that.” he said. They said their goodbyes and hang up.

Steve was shaking from head to toe. His heart was beating so fast, you’d think he’d just ran 10 miles. Yes, the mere mention of John Dixon, made his heart pump and his blood boil.

“Steve you dork, stop thinking about him.” He said shaking the thought from his head. “He’s not thinking about you.”
