CHAPTER 4: The Family
"I love you too," Steven replies into the reciever.
"You do, I can't understand why," John replies.
"Well if I understand why that's all that matters."
"Bye my love."
"Do you want to meet me for lunch with Linda?" Steven asked.
"I can't got to have lunch with my folks today," John sadly declines.
"Well then John Dixon, what will I have to do with you?'
"Whatever you want."
"Ooh, that's tempting."
"I really have to go now my love,"John replies.
"So do I, can I call you tonight?"Steven asks.
"Sure, I can't wait."
Steven hangs up the phone, runs down the stairs to meet his father.
"Ready to go dad?"
"In a minute Steven."
"Can I start the car Dad?"
"Sure, but be careful the clutch is a little sticky."
Graham throws Steven the keys and Steven walks out of the house to start the car.
"Steven Carter what in god's name do you think your doing, you can't drive," Linda yelled.
"Sure I can, anybody can drive better than you."
"Bitch!"
"Tsk, tsk, Ms. Hurd, language,"Steven scolded her jokingly.
"I am sorry Steven, what reperations must I pay to his royal highness?"
"You must get down on your knees and kiss my feet," Steven replied.
"No way, I have standards you know, and kissing gay men's feet is way below them."
"Well then I guess we'll never talk to each other again."Steven joked.
"Guess not, but hey listen, I met someone."
"Damn, I knew you'd be able to get my attention somehow."
"His name is Bryan."
"Please ma'am may I have more"
"Okay Oliver, like I was saying his name his Bryan Shaeffer, of London, but he is moving to Basingstoke next month, he is a lawyer and makes loads of money, he is with the firm Young Barnsworth and King, he is a junior associate," Linda stated proudly.
"So when do I get to meet the chap?" Steven asked.
"Well I don't know, are we still mad at eachother?"Linda smiled as she asked.
"God of course not my dear, you know I could never be mad at you."
"I know, anyways as I was saying, he is a lawyer, but heŠ’s only 23 he was skipped a grade in grade school. He went to Eton," Linda rambles on.

"John what are you up to tonight?" asks his mother.
"I don't know yet, probably getting together with Steve, why?"
"Invite him over for dinner, your father and I want to be more involved in your life and we feel this is a good as any place to start," Veronica stated.
"Thank you Mom, it really means alot to me and Steven."
"I know and listen, I am really sorry for how I reacted when you told me," Veronica apologized to her son.
"Mom, no matter what you do or say I will always love you."
"I know but I had to apologize, oh I almost forgot, your Grandfather wants to have lunch with you tomorrow, I can say your busy if you like."
"No, I have to tell him sometime," John told his mother.
"No, you don't I should tell him I am his daughter, you're his grandson."
"All the more reason it should come from me, not you, I will not back out of this one Mom."
"That is very brave of you, facing your Grandfather is one the hardest things you'll ever have to do."
"no, it won't be."
"If not that what will.?"Veronica asks.
"saying good bye."
"Saying good bye to who John?
"Steven."
"Why would you need to say good bye to Steven?"
"Someday, hopefully very far away, I will have to say goodbye to him."
"No you won't, you and Steven have a very special love that cannot be broken easily."
"You don't know that, nobody can predict the future."
"Then why are you trying to do so?"
"I am a realist, love doesn't always last forever."
"If you and Steven don't last forever than it was never true love, that my son always lasts forever."
"For some reason I know you're right."
"Good, common sense seems to only be on the male side of the family," Veronica tries to lighten the situation.
"No, it runs throughout the family, overreaction runs on the male side of the family," John retorts back.
"So you will have lunch with Grandad, are you going to bring Steven along?"
"Are you kidding, he might turn out to be okay with the fact that I am gay, but I would doubt he would be as just pleased meeting my boyfriend."
"You never no with the General, he can turn both ways."
"That's what scares me."

"Steven, telephone," yells Graham up the stairs.
"Thanks Dad, Hello."
"Hi lover who you fucking tonite?" says the reciever.
"Who is this?"
"Maybe I could come over for a quick one."
"Who is this."
"Listen here and listen good, get the hell out of this town or you'll regret it."
The line is disconnected.
"Steven whats wrong?" asks Graham.
"Call the police."
"Why," asks Sarah.
"I just go a threatening call, when you picked up Dad did they say who it was?"
"No, they just asked for you."
"I am going to call John."
"John, its me, yeah, can you get over here right away, somethings happened." Steven said with strain in his voice.
* * * *
"And you're sure you didn't recognise the voice on the telephone?"
"Yes sir, I am sure of it." Steven responds.
"Well then, we have contacted the phone company and they will trace the call but if this ever happens again call us and then we will trace it from the line outside andfor the time being we will have a car outside for the next 24 hours to make sure nobody tries anything, I doubt the will though but it is standard procedure," stated the officer.
"Thank you officer, let me show you out." Sarah led the officer out of the house.
"Steven, are you okay?" John asked.
"Yeah I'll be fine, I just cannot understand why people cannot get over the fact that I am gay. It's mind boggling that people can be so cruel," Steven moaned.
"Steven, so help me god if I ever find out who put you through this I'll make them pay for the pain they have caused you," John sweared.
"John I know you mean well but this isn't you, don't say such things. I love you John but please don't talk like that."
"O.k." John moaned.
"John, does your mother know your here?" Sarah asked.
"Yes when Steven called I was talking to her."
"Call her and tell her what has happened. Then ask her if it is okay if you can sleep over here tonight."
John was surprised when he heard Sarah tell him that, he had never been officially invited to spend the night before.
"I'll do that right away and thank you."
"For what John?"
"For being so accepting of us." John replied.
"I don't have to work to accept anyone John, I just do till that person gives me reason not too." Sarah responded.
"I love you mom," Steven told his mother.
Sarah Carter blushed when her son openly told her he loved her especially in front his boyfriend, not something Steven will openly admit.
"Now where are you two off to tonight?" asked Sarah.
"I don't know, I thought we should go back to my house to collect a few things and then tell my parents what has happened and then we'll come back here, is that okay Steve?" John asked.
"Yeah, but lets take the car I don't think we should walk back to your place."
"Do you think I walked here, God no, when your in trouble I drive faster than anybody else on the road. I put on my cement shoes." John joked but seriously.
"So you borrowed the car from you parents?" Steven asked.
"Yes, and my Dad will probably have to drive us back unless he doesn't need it in the morning."John replied.
"I just have to go put my watch on and get my wallet then we'll be off." Steven told John.
It was a quiet ride over to the Dixon house John was thinking about what had just occured and Steven was worried.
"John do you think someone would actually followthrough with the threat?" Steven asked.
"Probably not, most people around here are nothing but all gas and no go,"John reassured Steven.
They pulled up into the drive way of John's place where they found police cars and John's mother crying hysterically.
"Mom, What's wrong?" John screamed.
"Do you live here boy?" asked an officer.
"Yes sir."
"Then you should no somebody threw a brick through the window with this note attached." said the officer
EITHER GET OUT OF TOWN OR FACE THE CONSEQUENCES JOHN DIXON, WE CAN HURT YOU NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO WE'LL BE THERE.
"John what is it?" Steven asked.
"Steven, I want you to promise me right now that you will tell me if you are ever threatened again." John demanded.
"Johnny, you know I would tell you."
"Good."
"What is it though?"
"Read this."
Steven read the note handed to him by John and when he finished he was shocked.
"What are we going to do?" Steven asked.
"I am going to call Kevin, he'll know who did this." John replied.
"Why would Kevin know," asked Steven.
"Kevin has a lot of contacts with the boys in town, it seems like something a teenager would do as a prank."
John got on his mobile when is father pulled up in his black Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan.
"Steven what the hell is going on here?" Raymond Dixon demanded.
"Somebody has threatened me and John." Steven told John's father.
"What?!"Raymond screamed.
"Somebody threatened........"Steven repeated.
"I know what you said Steven it is just a bit of a shock to me.
