CHAPTER 2: Time for Love and Forgiveness
"Are your parents home?" asked John.
"No, they have gone out to the cinema."
"How long will they be?"
"Who knows they left just a few minutes before you got here."
"Do you want to? "
"I don't think that is wise right now."
"Why is that?"
"Because a lot of people will see, because Linda is watching from inside her house."
"Not out here, inside."
"Well why didn't you just say so."
Then they ran into the house.
* * * *
"Mrs. Carter, how are you this fine afternoon?" Linda asks.
"I am fine Linda, how are you?"
"Over joyed."
"Why is that?"
"Steven has a guest and they seem to have gotten back together."
"Him and John?" Linda nods. "Is John here?" Linda nods again frantically.
"Yes, probably in Steven's room, but don't disturb them."
"I see." As soon as Sarah Carter is told this, she realises what is going on in her son's bedroom.
"Graham, I need some groceries, let's go to the market."
"You just got some yesterday dear," blundered Graham.
"Yes, but I want to make Steven's favorite dish, and I just don't have the things."
"Let's go."
"Let me just go get my purse."
Sarah Carter walks into the house.
They lay there on Steven's bed. John is staring at the man he loves with all his heart, Steven is sound asleep.
"Hello Steven, John," bellows Sarah.
"Fuck me," John cries.
"I just did that," Steven laughs sleepily.
"Your mother is home."
"Did she call out to me," Steven asks.
"She just hello to both of us."
"We're fine then."
"How? Why?"
"If she called out, then she knows what is going on and she doesn't care."
"You're sure?"
"If I wasn't sure, then I wouldn't still be lying here naked with you on my bed."
"Point taken."
"How bout we get up and do something?" John asks.
"Sure."
"How bout going to my place?"
"Walk or drive?"
"Walk of course."
"Fine, but will you carry me?" Steven asks.
"No! I may be John 'Superman' Dixon, but I can't carry you."
"And why not?"
"Don't want to ruin the packaging, too beautiful," John said with a grin.
"Great recovery."
"Why are we going to your place?"
"Talk to my folks."
They leave the house and hear someone clapping only to turn around and see it is Linda.
"What the hell are you clapping for?"Steven asks.
"You two are back together and you just 'celebrated', and I will drive you wherever you are going."
"Is it really that clear?"John asks her.
"Yes, but I also saw the house shaking so I knew." Linda laughs as she says this.
"You gotta be on something to think like that Linda Hurd." Steven states sarcastically.
"I just learn from the best."
"And who might that be?"
"Steven Carter."
"Me, I never talk like that."
"Oh, Linda he's got eye like Brad Pitt," she recites from months before.
"That's not the same thing."
"Wait, eyes like Brad Pitt, short shaved head, tall, named Glenn," John asks Steven.
"Yes, how do you know?"
"The park near the woods, the public toilets."
"Oh, my John Dixon, I never knew," says Steven shocked
"Nobody did."
"Well, where are you two love birds going?" Linda questions.
"My place," John tells her.
"Playing musical beds now are we?"
"No, Linda, we are going to talk to my parents," replies John cautiously.
"Why."
"My mother doesn't know yet."
"Then your father does?"
"I told him this morning."
"Well let's get going," screams Linda.
They rush into the cramped car, with Steven on John's lap, enjoying every minute of the ride.
Linda hear giggle next to her.
"What are you two school girls giggling about."
"Just talking about the first thing that popped up," answers John.
"Oh that's something I wanted to know."
"You asked Lins," giggled Steven.
"I beginning to feel sorry for asking."
As they pulled up to John's, his mother was on the veranda looking at the flowers.
"Oh bugger," cried John.
"Lins, thanks for the ride," said Steven.
"John Dixon, what is that BOY doing on your lap?" screamed Veronica Dixon.
"Mother, is father home?"
"Yes, he is in the study."
"Let's go inside mother."
"Why must we always go inside to answer questions?" asked Veronica.
They go inside and meet John's father, Raymond in his study.
"Hello Steven, John."
"Mom sit down please," John asks.
Veronica Dixon sits, worried and unsure about what might come next.
"Mom, I lied to when I said I didn't know Steven."
"Why John, you used to be able to tell me anything."
"I know mom, but the thing is when you and father asked me it kind of caught me off guard," John says wearily.
"Then Steven was here that weekend."
"Yes, he was."
"Why?"
"Mom, I am gay, and Steven is my boyfriend and lover."
"That is a lie, why must you keep lying to me John."
"Mother, it isn't a lie."
Raymond sits down next to his wife and looks at John and Steven to go.
"Vee, it is the truth, John told me this morning, and Steven is his boyfriend."
After that statement Veronica Dixon is crying in her huisbands arm.
"What have I done to deserve this, why?" she cries.
"There is nothing wrong with our son being gay, there is something wrong when you feel angry at our son for being who he is."
"How can you be so calm about this Raymond?"
"I love my son, and it is my job to love him no matter what."
"I don't know, what will people think?"
"If all you can think about is what people will think, you don't deserve to have a son Veronica."
"That isn't fair."
"Isn't it, it's not fair to John how you treat him like a second class citizen."
"I know, but this is all so sudden."
"Is there any other way for it to be," asks her husband.
"No, I guess not."
"John, Steven, please come in here."
"Yes father, Mr. Dixon."
"How do you feel about going out for a late lunch?"
"Actually we're both hungary," responds John.
"Okay, I figured you boys would be back so I've made reservations at your favorite restaurant Vee,"Raymond announced.
"For what time?"John asked.
"For 3 o'clock."
"Well we should get ready then Steve," John says.
They shoot each other a look that says everything to them. They boys shot out of the room and dove upstairs.
"Well they seem to be happy don't they Vee."
"Yes they do," she responds glumly.
"Why can't you accept that your son is happy and he found someone that he loves and loves him back?"
"It's not that."
"Well then what is it?"
"I can't explain it."
"Can't explain it, or won't explain it."
"Why is it this conversation is against me Raymond?"
"I am trying to get your perspective on why you can't love your son because he is gay."
"I love him, it's just that the timing is wrong on his coming out."
"Why is that?"
"He is going to Oxford and they may not look to kindly on this."
"We will worry about that IF it ever comes," Raymond told his wife.
"I just have a feeling that this is going to ruin everything we.... he has worked for."
"That's it isn't it, you feel he has undone everything and you don't know how people will react."
Veronica Dixon is speechless when she realises her husband is exactly right and she doesn't know how to respond.
"Vee, I can tell by your response that I am right, but listen to me carefully, as long as I am alive our son, will be our son!"
"He his my son Raymond, I just feel unconfortable right now, I'll get over it."
"I understand."
"Thank you Raymond."
