CHAPTER 1: Chapter One
This is a story based on the most influential movie of my life Get Real; this movie helped me to come to terms with my own sexuality and probably saved my life.
I hope that people like this story of mine, it continues on after Steven walked away from John on the field at the end of the movie.

(Later on that night)
“John would you pass me the peas please,” Veronica Dixon asks her son as she sat opposite him at the dinner table. “Mmmm” says John as he absently hands his mother the dish in question. ”John are you all right dear,” She asks her son as she gives her husband a questioning look. “Wha… umm yea mum I’m ok” John replies as he continues to stare at his plate. Suddenly he pushes his plate away from him as he stands and runs away from the table Raymond Dixon gives his wife a uneasy glance as their son leaves the room.

“Steven Carter sometimes I really hate...”” me Loathe me Detest me just do it,” Steven begs his best friend Linda as they are driving round Basingstoke “Well ok hon, but if he says anything horrible to you I’ll have his hide,” Linda says as she sighs quietly and turns the car around in the direction of Johns house.

“No Graham, you are not going to do anything to him, he’s our son and he was right you know. What are we all afraid of its only love.” And with that comment Graham Carter exploded again about how his son, his only son was not going to be a ‘filthy poofter’ and how he needed to go to a psychiatrist to work out this problem. With this comment Sarah Carter had had enough, “NO GRAHAM, it is normal, there is nothing wrong with him, true it isn’t what we wanted for him, But are you going to turn your back on your only son because he’s something other than what you wanted him to be”. And with that Sarah turned around and walked away to wait for her precious son to come home.

Steven suddenly felt nervous as he stepped up to the Dixon’s imposing front door and even more nervous as he knocked, ‘What am I doing here, I shouldn’t have come here’ he thought as he waited for the reply. “Oh there’s someone at the door, maybe it will be one of John’s friends to take him out,” Veronica says to her husband as she goes to answer the door. “Uhh… hello Mrs. Dixon is John home?” Steven asks suddenly feeling very scared and small under her close scrutiny. “Yes, yes he is ahh Steven. Please come in” Veronica says as she recognizes the boy standing in front of her on their doorstep. “John you have a visitor” she yells after she tells Steven to go up to Johns room.

‘I hope he is all right in there’ Linda thinks as she watches Steven walk into the house. “Oh well” she thinks to herself, “there’s nothing I can do now but wait”.

Steven walks up the stairs to John’s room with trepidation. ‘What will I say to him?’ He thinks as he nears John’s door. “Johnny,” Steven calls out as he opens John’s door and seeing John lying on his bed curled up into a ball crying, “as he rushes over to comfort the man he loves Steven says Johnny I’m here now”.

“Raymond dear, you remember that Steven Carter boy, who took those photos of John and gave that speech today?” Veronica asked her husband, “Yes dear why is that?” Raymond asks his wife. “Because he is upstairs with John.” She replies. “HE’S WHAT!” Raymond yells “What the bloody hell is he doing here?” He says with exasperation as he gives his wife a look of irritation and disbelif that says how could she even have let that gay troublemaker in the house.
“Raymond Dixon get a hold of yourself, John is still the captain of the school and who he is friends with is none of our business.” Veronica says to curb her husbands anger.
“Now you just go and get ready for dinner like you were going to” Veronica says “Our reservation is at 6 and it is now nearly 5.30” “Yes dear” Raymond says as his anger starts to abate as he climbs the stairs to get dressed for dinner.

Sarah Carter casts another look out the window for her brave little boy. ‘No, not little boy.’
She thinks sadly to herself, ‘Steven has certainly grown up to have done what he did today,’ she thought but she was so proud of him.
She couldn’t even imagine how hard it would have been for her son to have given that speech, she sighed quietly again as she sat down to wait for her son.

“Johnny please, tell me what’s wrong,” Steven whispers to John as he takes John into his arms. “St..Ste..Steven” Johnny whimpers on Stevens shoulders, “I..I..I’m so sorry for what I did to you in the locker room.” Johnny manages to get out before he breaks down again into incontrollable sobbing. “It’s all right Johnny I’ve already forgiven you for that,” Steven murmurs gently to John, as his eyes also start to tear because of the state Johnny is in.
“WHAT THE HELL IS THIS THEN!” Raymond yells because of what he sees as he walks past Johns room and sees John crying while that queer boy is holding him in his arms comforting him. Hearing his father’s voice John instinctively pulls himself away from Steven and runs to his father to try and explain why he was being held by Steven. But his father is beyond listening as he strides towards Steven with a murderous glint in his eye.
“DAD STOP” John yells as his father grab Steven by his shirt and throws him at the door.
Steven is wide eyed and shaking with fear as Raymond comes towards him again. “DAD LEAVE STEVEN ALONE” John yells again as his father punches Steven in the head and sends him flying out the door.
“DAD STOP HITTING THE MAN I LOVE,” John yells as he runs to protect Steven from his father.
“THE WHAT?” Raymond yells as he stands in front of John who is in a protective stance in front of Steven who is shaking uncontrollably.
“RAYMOND WHAT ARE THE HELL ARE YOU DOING TO THEM,?” Veronica yells as she comes round the corner to see what all the yelling and crashing was about.
“John was crying, and they were cuddling,” Raymond tells his wife expecting support “So what, that gives you the right to hit them,” She says as John starts backing away dragging Steven with him.
“WHERE THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING?” Raymond yells at John, “I’m taking Steven home” John replies “and I won’t be back till tomorrow” he adds as he sees his mothers sudden flash of understanding and support. "YOUR NOT GOING ANYWHERE” Raymond yells, “Yes that’s right dear” Veronica says, which causes John to stare at his mother.
“They are not going anywhere, but you are.” She tells her husband. “If you don’t leave this house immediately I will ring the police and have you arrested for assault”. She calmly tells her husband. John stares at his mother in amazement while Steven is still shaking behind him.
“I’m not going anywhere woman.” Raymond tells his wife as he takes a step towards her. “John ring the police now“. Veronica orders her son as she takes a step closer to the man she once loved.
“Raymond if you love me please go now” she says softly while looking directly into his eyes. “No I’m not going anywhere and get the hell out of my way”. He tells her.
She doesn’t move as she realizes that nothing she can say will get through to him, ‘Well at least I know now why John behaviour has been so different these past few months’ she thinks to herself as she hears John urgently yelling for police into his mobile behind her.
Then she felt herself go flying back with a dull pain in her side she realizes that her husband has just hit her.
“NO! DON”T YOU FUCKING TOUCH HER AGAIN!” John yells as he hands the phone to Steven and leaps at his father swinging his fists barely conscious of the hits he scores or the blows he takes as he fights to protect the most important people in his life his mother and lover. Suddenly the fight was broken up by police as they came busting up the stairs with an astonished Linda in tow to arrest Raymond.

“No Sir” John automatically tells the Police Officer in answer to the question asked of him. “I think that that is enough for tonight”. Veronica tells the Officer as she sees John is not concentrating on the questions.
“We will come down to the station tomorrow to finish our statements and to press charges” Veronica tells the Officer as John gives her a grateful look. He goes over to Steven who is sitting in a chair with Linda who is trying to soothe him.
“Is he ok?” John asks Linda while sitting on the other side of him. “Yes I think he will be ok” Linda replies, “What the fuck happened to him anyway?” She asks as she glares at John. “He was attacked by my husband.” Veronica injects in answer to Linda’s question “now do you have Stevens phone number she asks her,” “Uhh yeah why” Linda asks, “Because I think I need to ring his parents and tell them what has happened, and to ask them if they don’t mind if Steven stays here tonight” Veronica tells her. “ohh ok its 36 458 1275” Linda tells her in surprise as John looks at his mother with a look of understanding and hope
“Just make sure you ask for Mrs Carter she adds.
“Steveie I’ll see you tomorrow tart,” Linda says as she gives Steven a kiss on the cheek and then leaves with a sad yet pleased look back at her best friend as she leaves.
“Umm hello is Mrs Cater there please?” Veronica says into the telephone. “This is Mrs Dixon here John’s mother, we meet today at the sports day, yes, yes I’m fine, yes that’s right I’m ringing up about Steven.
You see it turns out that he and John were seeing each other in secret and when John’s father found out today he attacked Steven and John. No, no he is ok now, he took a few punches, but then John and I stepped in and now Raymond is in jail and, well, I was just wondering if Steven could stay here for the night with John.
I think they need each other at the moment. Yes that would be fine would you be able to come around here after lunch tomorrow? As we have to go to the police station in the morning and finish our statements and press charges against Raymond. Ok well thank you as well and we’ll see you tomorrow bye” Veronica says to Sarah before she hangs up the phone.
“Steven I have rang your Mother and you may stay here tonight with John if you wish.” She tells the stunned boys, “Tomorrow morning we will go to the police station and finish our statements and press charges. After lunch your parents are coming over to talk with us,”
She finishes telling the boys “And I don’t want any questions till the morning she says while waving her hand in a dismissing manner I will see you boys tomorrow then. I’m going to bed now she says as she makes here way to the bedroom she shared with her husband”.
Slowly the boys get over their astonishment of Veronica’s statements and gradually make their way back into John’s Bedroom.
“So Johnny does this mean that you are finally going to be open about us now?” Steven hesitantly asks the man he loves John suddenly stops moving and looks Steven directly in the eyes and says, “Well what do you think, Of course it does”. John replies with a look absolute love and devotion “I love you more than life and when you walked away from me on that field today I realised what you really mean to me” John says as he pulls Steven in for a romantic kiss then as he leads Steven to the bed he says with tears in his eyes, “Steven Cater I love you” And with that simple but infallible statement they slip into the bed to finally be together without worrying if anyone will ever find out about them.
