CHAPTER 1:
[ANOTHER STORY I REPLACED. SORRY AGAIN IF YOU'VE READ IT BEFORE - Jon]
“Come on sweetheart, cheer up” said Linda, as Steven’s smile seemed to fade more rapidly into a look of sadness. “You’re out – you did it.”
“Yeah, that’s great. I feel sooooo good.”
“Look, there’s no need to get sarcastic.”
“Sorry.”
“Why don’t you just call him?”
“Don’t you understand Linds. He won’t want to see me. He says he loves me, but everyone knows I’m gay now. He couldn’t be seen with me. Not John Dixon.”
“Oh bullshit.”
“Yeah, well, that’s the way it is. Bugger all I can do about it now.”
With that, Linda pressed her foot onto the floor, and they continued on their tour of the countryside round Basingstoke.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“John dear, your father and I are leaving now.” John just continued to sit and stare at his feet. “John, I’m speaking to you.”
“Yeah, I heard.”
“Don’t take that tone with me. I’m your mother.”
“Sorry. Look, I’m gonna go out with Kevin and the boys” John answered. “To celebrate” he added bitterly.
“Well don’t be home late.”
His mother looked back several times as she walked back to the school, unsure of what to do. Her son, who had just been honoured for his sporting achievements, was staring at his feet again.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Graham, honey, you’ve hardly said a word since we left the school. We need to talk about this.”
“I’m sorry, but I just don’t know what to say.”
“I know. I know.”
“I mean, how could he stand up there and pronounce it to the whole school, before he had even spoken to us. Doesn’t he trust us? Don’t we love him enough?”
“Graham, he was just scared.”
“What in heaven’s name made him do it there and then?”
“Well…”
“I noticed a cut on his head. And he was looking at that John Dixon bloke during the speech. I swear to God, I am gonna get to the bottom of this.”
“Maybe you should leave Steve to tell us in his own time. We don’t want to bombard him with questions when he’s feeling so vulnerable.”
“Well he’s going to have to talk sometime soon. I want an explanation.” Steven’s father knew he would never get the explanation he needed – how could anyone tell him what he had done wrong to make Steven this way?
Graham and Sarah Carter spent the rest of the journey home in silence again.
